Jewish, Christian And Islamic Historic Places Of Worship Reps Meet At London Synagogue

The Grade I Listed New West End Synagogue was the splendid setting for this year's Annual Members' Day of the Historic Religious Buildings Alliance (HRBA, formerly Places of Worship@Heritage Link).

September 2012

Some forty members who, through the HRBA, are under the umbrella of the national Heritage Alliance, met for an informal day of talks,  networking and lunch on Sunday 12th September. They included English Heritage Support Officers appointed to several Church of England Dioceses, representatives of the Anglican Church Commissioners and the Cathedral and Churches Building Division, as well as of the Catholic Patrimony Committee and the Methodist Church; the Churches Conservation Trust, the Historic Chapels Trust and Churches Tourism Association. They were treated to a tour of the synagogue by Jewish Heritage's Director, Dr Sharman Kadish. Whilst the majority were Christian, for the first time at the AMD, a fasinating presentation about the history of the English mosque and of 'Oriental' influence on English architecture, was made by Mobeen Butt. He is founder of the new website Islam in British Stone - Britain's first Muslim Heritage group.
