English Heritage funds support for historic synagogues at risk

Survey Reveals One Third of Listed Synagogues are Cause for Concern

July 2010

In line with "Support Officers" appointed to the Church of England and other Christian denominations, English Heritage has appointed Jewish Heritage to help historic synagogues meet the challenges that they face. English Heritage is providing nearly £91,000 of funding, with additional support from the Rothschild Foundation Europe.

In preparation for the task, last year Jewish Heritage was commissioned by English Heritage to undertake the first ever condition survey of all the Listed synagogues in the country. Of the 36 mainly listed synagogues surveyed, 11 are found to be at risk, being rated as in a poor or very bad physical state. Overall, historic synagogues are losing members and congregations are shrinking, threatening some buildings with redundancy.
